Man dies following shooting at Fort Benning Road apartment

One of the three men who were shot early Sunday at an apartment on Fort Benning Road has died, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said.

Robert Lewis, 29, was pronounced dead at 5:21 a.m. Tuesday at the Columbus Midtown Medical Center. His body will be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Decatur for an autopsy.

The other victims were treated at the hospital and released.

Columbus police were called to the 2300 block of Fort Benning Road around 3:33 a.m. Sunday to investigate a shooting. They found three men suffering from gunshot wounds, including Lewis. No other details concerning the incident have been provided.

The Muscogee County Coroner’s Office marks Lewis’ death as the 34th Columbus homicide of 2017, but the police department list it as the 28th. Bryan does not differentiate between a homicide that police consider a murder and one they categorize as manslaughter or a justifiable shooting.

Lewis’ death follows the shooting of 35-year-old Lonny Braxton, who was found dead early Saturday in a backyard on Clover Avenue.
