Baby found crying in Columbus apartment after murder-suicide, police say

A baby was found crying Sunday afternoon in a Columbus apartment on Williams Court where a man allegedly killed a woman before committing suicide, Columbus police stated in a news release.

Denis McGibney, 56, was identified as the man who fatally shot 29-year-old Casey Clark in their home. The child, who was found in the residence with no injuries, was turned over to the Division of Family and Children Services until next of kin could be notified.

Columbus police were called to Greystone Falls Apartments at 1701 Williams Court around 1:10 p.m. Sunday to conduct a welfare check. When they arrived on the scene, they spoke to McGibney’s friends.

They said they were concerned that something had gone wrong inside of his apartment, because they could not get anyone to answer the door. They also reported hearing a baby crying in the home. All of McGibney’s vehicles were still in the parking lot, according to police.

Officials said they entered the home and found McGibney and Clark dead with apparent gunshot wounds.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said the bodies are still at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Decatur, where medical examiners are still performing autopsies to determine the official manner and cause of death.

Detectives with the homicide unit said further investigation indicated that Clark and McGibney got involved in a domestic dispute in their home. During the incident, McGibney allegedly assaulted Clark and fatally shot her. He then shot and killed himself, authorities said.
