Columbus police arrested a career criminal Monday after he walked out of Walmart and passed an officer with a reportedly stolen duffel bag full of loot.

Terry Jerido, 51, was charged with shoplifting and appeared in Recorder’s Court Tuesday morning where the details of his alleged crime were outlined by patrol officer Justin Doll, who made the arrest.

Jerido walked out of the Victory Drive Walmart with the bag stuffed with more than 25 items, Doll said. Jerido walked past Doll who was finishing a traffic stop on Victory Drive. Not long after Jerico passed, a Walmart manager knocked on the window of the patrol car and said they had just called police.

When Doll approached Jerido, there was no resistance, Doll told the court. What Jerido, who has been in and out of legal trouble for more than two decades, said next did surprise the officer.

“He looked at me and said he was glad he got caught, that he was tired of shoplifting,” Doll told the court.

The officer was asked by one of the attorneys if that was a direct quote or was he paraphrasing.

“That’s what he said, ‘I am glad I got caught; I am tired of shoplifting,’” Doll told the court.

In addition to the stolen bag, there were stolen items such as socks, soap and tools, Doll said.

Jerido served almost a year in prison in 1996 and 1997 for robbery and possession of cocaine convictions, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He served nearly eight years in prison between 2003 and 2011 on a 2002 aggravated assault conviction, according to the Department of Corrections.

Jerido also has multiple arrests for theft and shoplifting charges, according to court records. Jerido also faces probation violation charges.
