Police seek multiple suspects in BTW Apartments homicide

Columbus police confirmed Tuesday morning that multiple suspects are sought in 33-year-old Lacosta Williams' death after he was fatally shot Monday afternoon at the Booker T. Washington apartment complex.

Williams' death marks the city's first homicide in two months. He was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. at Midtown Medical Center after officials found him suffering from a single gunshot wound outside the apartment, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan said Tuesday.

According to a police report, Williams suffered from a gunshot wound to the torso. His body is being transported for an autopsy in Atlanta.

Lt. John McMichael said Monday that the victim was shot a little after 4 p.m. Police had apartment C of building 412 taped off Monday afternoon and evening while several neighbors sat outside and watched the investigation unfold feet from Veterans Parkway.

No arrests have been made, McMichael said. Police indicated Monday evening their investigation would continue into the night.

As of 11 a.m., police officials said no suspects have been developed. No new facts about the case were available.

Evidence indicators marked three blood spots east of apartment C, in front of apartments E and D. Evidence markers 4 and 5 were on the front steps of apartment C, which had "Momy" written inside a yellow heart scribbled on the screen door as a child's fire truck sat nearby.

Police at one point placed a left foot flip flop next to markers 4 and 5 and took several photos before placing the sandal in a brown paper bag. They also were seen going through a gold Chevrolet Impala behind the apartment, where a woman emerged, walked to the car and returned.

Neighbors said Williams often visited the BTW Apartments, where his child and child's mother live. Others said Williams was a barber who often cut hair for the kids in the neighborhood.

The deadly shooting is the 19th homicide in Columbus this year. It's the first homicide since Aug. 23, when 47-year-old Bobby Ray Stewart was shot at The Supper Club on Buena Vista Road.
