Hurricane Irma’s projected path has prompted the Muscogee County School District and other institutions to consider closing.

With winds ranging beyond 40 mph late Sunday evening into Monday morning and lasting through the evening, the Muscogee County School District has canceled school for Monday. That includes all school-related activities and the Board of Education work session on Monday evening. The work session will be rescheduled and held as a joint work session and meeting at 5 p.m. Monday on Sept. 18. A decision on Tuesday will be made when more information becomes available.

Superintendent David Lewis said on Friday that MCSD leaders are “working closely with emergency management officials to monitor the potential path and impact of Hurricane Irma.”

MCSD’s central administration also has provided schools and departments with the following precautionary measures:

Brace/secure loose outdoor equipment.

Remove loose yard debris.

Relocate nonessential yard/athletic equipment inside, if possible.

Make sure the staff phone tree is up to date.

Develop a plan to deploy the safety team next week in the morning and afternoons to areas of high traffic. Have the team monitor for wet floors. Make sure signs and mats are available.
