An undisclosed number of students suffered “minor injuries” Monday morning when a van collided with a Muscogee County School District bus, MCSD announced in a news release.

MCSD was notified about the accident at approximately 8:15 a.m., the news release says. The bus was en route to East Columbus Magnet Academy when a van struck the bus at the intersection of Josephine Street and Chalbena Avenue, according to the news release.

“The driver immediately contacted school officials, who then notified the (Columbus) Police Department and parents of the accident,” the news release says. “Some students reported minor injuries related to the incident. The driver of the van was issued a citation for a traffic violation at the site of the accident. The accident is now under investigation with the Columbus Police Department. The District will continue to work in cooperation with local law enforcement throughout the investigation.”

The Ledger-Enquirer asked MCSD communications director Mercedes Parham how many students were on the bus, how many were injured, the nature of those injuries and whether any of them were taken to a hospital. The L-E will report those answers when they are received.
