Auburn basketball player announces he’s leaving the program
After two years at Auburn, forward Desean Murray is moving on.
Murray announced on Twitter Tuesday that he is leaving Auburn. Murray said he has not decided whether he will become a graduate transfer to another school or instead begin his professional career.
“Auburn has lead (sic) me to many great memories, experiences, and relationships that I will forever cherish,” Murray wrote. “I appreciate the amazing opportunity to play at one of the best schools in the country and to be coach by Coach Bruce Pearl and staff.”
Murray transferred to Auburn from Presbyterian, where he was a Big South First Team selection in the 2015-2016 season. After sitting out the next season at Auburn, he returned to the court in 2017-2018, starting all 34 games and averaging 10.1 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds at the power forward position.
The junior’s play helped the Tigers grab a share of the SEC regular season title and make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 seasons.
Murray’s announcement only adds to an Auburn roster that is in flux. Backup point guard Davion Mitchell announced his intent to transfer, while Mustapha Heron declared for the NBA Draft and intends to hire an agent. Jared Harper and Austin Wiley are going through the draft process but will not hire agents, which leaves the door open for a return to the Tigers.
“I would like to thank God for this amazing opportunity and (say) thank you to Auburn, the coaches my teammates and all of the fans for believing in me and trusting in me all the way,” Murray said. “War Eagle!!!”
