Is it legal in GA to ride in the bed of a pickup truck? Here’s what the law says
If you’re going for a joy ride in the bed of a truck, think again.
Sure, it might be fun or convenient for passengers that won’t fit inside the truck, but is it actually legal to ride in the bed of a pickup truck?
Here’s what to know:
Is it legal in GA to ride in the bed of a truck?
Well, it depends on a few things.
According to Georgia law, it is “unlawful for any person under the age of 18 to ride as a passenger in the uncovered bed of a pickup truck on any interstate highway.”
While it is illegal for people under 18 on the interstate, the law doesn’t make it illegal for younger people on other roads.
Of course, it is still dangerous.
“While it’s legal for most people to ride in the bed of a truck in Georgia, it doesn’t mean it’s safe or something you should do. It’s considered a risky driving behavior,” as stated in a blog from Hines Law.
Additionally, if the driver gets into an accident, there’s a higher chance of serious injuries or death because there are no protections in place.
What are the consequences for not abiding by this law?
Drivers that are caught with a passenger under 18 riding in the truck bed on an interstate will be guilty of a misdemeanor, according to the law.
