Do GA folks spend more on healthcare than people in other states? What new study says
Healthcare costs have skyrocketed over the years and affordable healthcare seems harder and harder to get.
In fact, “Americans’ average annual out-of-pocket health care spending has risen from $811 to $1,514 over the past two decades, outpacing inflation,” said Adam McCann with WalletHub.
So, WalletHub analysts compiled a new study ranking how much people in each state spend on healthcare and then ranked each state by the most and least costs. Analysts specifically looked at the costs of doctor, dentist and optometrist visits, as well as certain medications in each state.
So, where does Georgia rank?
How much do people in GA spend on healthcare?
The WalletHub study revealed that people in Georgia spend 6.62% of their median monthly household income on healthcare. This means Georgia is ranked 39th overall, showing the Peach state residents spend less than most other states.
How does that compare to what people spend on healthcare in surrounding states?
Florida residents spend 6.05% of their median monthly household income on healthcare, while Alabama spends 7.32%, which is on the higher side of the cost of healthcare.

According to the WalletHub study, these are the states that spend the most on healthcare:
- Alaska - 10.08%
- Oregon - 9.32%
- Maine - 9.30%
- Mississippi - 9.18%
- West Virginia - 9.14%

- Virginia - 5.62%
- California - 5.64%
