As a native Georgian and avid TV watcher, I am always delighted to find a show that thoughtfully and respectfully represents the South, specifically Georgia. It’s even better when they get the accent right.

More and more television shows and movies are coming to Georgia. Thanks to its incentivizing tax rules, we’ve become the “Hollywood of the South.” As a result, Georgia has become the setting of many shows, and even more productions choose to film here.

Once I learn a show is set or filmed here, I’m definitely going to watch it, so I’ve seen a lot of TV and I’m somewhat of a TV aficionado. Being raised on TV as a Gen-X latchkey kid doesn’t hurt the qualifications either.

Based on my comprehensive research in the matter, I’ve compiled a list of shows that make Georgia their primary setting and a list of shows that are filmed here.

Here’s a little bit about each one and how to watch them:

TV shows set in Georgia

Will Trent

  • Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling novels, this ABC crime drama follows GBI Special Agent Will Trent as he solves complex cases in Atlanta, Georgia. Season three is currently airing.

  • Stream on: Hulu.

  • Like it or lump it: Like it. In fact, I love it. I enjoy this so much and the accents don’t make me want to climb out of my skin.

The Bondsman

  • A good ol’ boy bounty hunter, played by Kevin Bacon, returns from the dead, facing a demonic twist to his old job to reexamine his life and a forgotten musical career.

  • Stream on: Amazon Prime Video

  • Like it or lump it: I’ve only seen one episode, but so far, I’m in. It’s giving “Preacher” and “Wynona Earp” vibes. Who can resist Kevin Bacon?

Atlanta

  • Donald Glover plays Earnest “Earn” Marks, who seeks to manage aspiring artist, Paper Boi, as they navigate the Atlanta rap scene relationships.

  • Stream on: Hulu

  • Like it or lump it: I find Glover endlessly fascinating, so seeing him explore themes of race and culture is always going to be a yes from me.

Insatiable

  • Premise: Former child star, Deby Ryan, plays a bullied teenager who turns to beauty pageants for revenge, aided by a disgraced coach who gets entangled in her schemes.

  • Stream on: Netflix

  • Like it or lump it: I like it fine. It’s trying to be Mean Girls meets Drop Dead Gorgeous, but doesn’t quite meet the mark. The pageant satire got a few laughs from me.

Kenan

  • Premise: Kenan Thompson plays a version of himself, Kenan Williams, who is a widowed father hosting a morning show while juggling family and career challenges.

  • Stream on Peacock (via NBC)

  • Like it or lump it: Call it nostalgia for the Good Burger days, but I thought it was cute. It was short-lived, but it had some fun supporting characters (like Don Johnson playing his father-in-law)

Man in Full

  • Premise: A miniseries about Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker, played by Jeff Daniels, defends his empire amidst bankruptcy and political intrigue.

  • Streaming Platform: Netflix

  • Like it or lump it: Daniels’ accent was a hard no for me, and it was a fairly intense watch. It was easy to finish in a weekend, but it never quite met the Succession bar it was aspiring to.

Love, Victor

  • Premise: A coming-of-age story, the series stars Michael Cimino as Victor, who is struggling to navigate high school and grapple with his sexual orientation.

  • Stream on: Hulu and Disney+.

  • Like it or lump it: It’s not as light-hearted as its predecessor, Love, Simon, but worth the watch.

Raising Dion

  • Premise: A widowed mother discovers her son has superpowers while protecting him from exploitation and investigating her husband’s murder.
  • Stream on: Netflix.
  • Like it or lump it: I’ll watch (and probably love) anything with Michael B. Jordan, but this was a fun take on the superhero genre.

The Resident

  • Premise: A medical drama focusing on the lives of doctors at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital as they navigate ethical dilemmas and personal struggles.
  • Streaming on: Hulu
  • Like it or lump it: Like it. As far as medical dramas go, this one does the case-of-the-week fairly well, but I came for the characters, namely Matt Czuchry as Dr. Conrad Hawkins and Emily VanCamp as Nicolette Nevin.

Designing Women

  • Premise: This show chronicles four women running an interior design firm in Atlanta, but it is far more iconic than that. Infamous characters like Julia and Suzanne Sugarbaker make this Southern-settings canon.
  • Streaming Platform: Hulu.
  • Like it or lump it: Love it, duh. It’s so good the first time you watch and it holds up every subsequent watch.

Mindhunter

  • Premise: FBI agents delve into criminal psychology to understand serial killers during the early days of criminal profiling. They attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their damaged psyches.
  • Streaming Platform: Netflix.
  • Like it or lump it: Like it. It has a very loyal fandom and audiences rave about it in every forum.

If reality is more your thing

  • Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta

  • The Real Housewives of Atlanta

  • Welcome to Plathville

  • Married to Medicine

  • Later Daters

Shows filmed (not set) in Georgia

  • The Walking Dead (Netflix)

  • Stranger Things (Netflix)

  • Ozark (Netflix)

  • The Vampire Diaries (Max [formerly HBO Max]).

  • P-Valley (Starz app or Hulu with Starz add-on)

  • Sweet Magnolias

Georgia is quickly becoming a staple for TV productions, which makes it easier for fans to take location tours or even maybe see their favorite actor around town.
