Recruiting roundup: Kennesaw State comes calling at Central
Kennesaw State football has two Central graduates on its 2017 roster in running back Jaxton Carson and defensive back Demetrius Pettway. If the Owls have their way, they’ll have several more Red Devils in the near future.
Central offensive lineman Jahlil Ryles and defensive lineman Tyler Moore picked up offers from Kennesaw State on June 23. For Ryles, it’s his 11th scholarship offer. It is Moore’s fifth offer.
Central linebacker DeAnthony Miles has also received attention from Kennesaw State, having visited the program on June 22.
With events getting underway at The Opening finals on Thursday, many will be keying in on Central wide receiver Justyn Ross. Ross, considered the top prospect in Alabama and a five-star player, is one of 166 top-tier talents to participate in the event put on by Nike Football.
“I just want to go there and have a great experience,” Ross said. “I want to show the nation why I’m one of the top receivers.”
Manchester linebacker Jontavious Ferguson has continued to add scholarship offers after decommitting from Central Florida on June 12. UAB and Georgia Southern have joined a list that now stands at 12 teams strong.
Baseball
Glenwood pitcher Daniel Holley was named a 2017 Collegiate Baseball All-American. Holley went 12-1 with 117 strikeouts and a 0.68 ERA and was named the All-Bi-City 1A-3A Pitcher of the Year.
Russell County pitcher Hunter Milam and Central catcher Slade Gorman picked up some championship trophies with the Ohio Warhawks on June 24, as the team won the inaugural Pathway Games. The team captured the title with a 6-5 victory over Slammers-Martin (Centennial, Colo.).
Russell County baseball player Robert Miles has signed with Jackson State. Miles previously played at Central before transferring to Russell County for his senior season. He pitched and played center field for the Warriors in 2017, posting a 3-2 record with a 4.50 ERA.
Boys Golf
Columbus High School golfer Ben Carr has earned a spot in the 70th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and was only one of four golfers in the Georgia State Golf Association to do so. Carr posted a 72.8 round average in 2017 and helped Columbus capture its second consecutive state championship.
Girls Basketball
Shaw rising freshman point guard Kionna Gaines caught some attention at the Georgia Tech women’s basketball camp on June 24 and 25. According to Hoop-Nation.com, Gaines was “explosive, (has length and is a) 3-level scorer that competes.”
