1. Columbus NAACP president arrested during protest: Failing to heed the warnings of Columbus police not to block the street, Tonza Thomas, the president of the local NAACP branch, and Marquese Averett, a former candidate for city council, were taken into custody July 9 while protesting on Veterans Parkway at 10th Street. Tonza Thomas, president of the Columbus branch of the NAACP, and Marquese Averett were handcuffed and arrested on two charges each around 7:19 p.m. after they blocked Veterans Parkway for three to five minutes, said Police Maj. J.D. Hawk of the Bureau of Patrol Services. They were charged with one count each of unlawful assembly and obstruction of a roadway.

2. Police: Man dies in Columbus crash after shoving driver’s head into steering wheel: The 25-year-old Phenix City man who died in Monday’s single-vehicle crash on J.R. Allen Parkway pushed the driver’s head into the steering wheel prior to the collision, according to an accident report from the Columbus Police Department. The driver told authorities that Jeremie Markey Perry became upset with her about a loan and allegedly shoved her head while she was driving down the ramp to the parkway.

3. Kevin Hart to perform at Columbus Civic Center: Acclaimed comedian Kevin Hart will be making a stop in Columbus during his “What Now?” tour. Tickets for the show, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Columbus Civic Center, went on sale Tuesday. Ross Horner, director of the Civic Center, said it is not a normal practice for the Civic Center to sale tickets simultaneously with the announcement of the event.

4. Sheriff Heath Taylor frustrated with media coverage of police shootings: Chuck Williams said Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor has had it up to here with the mainstream media he thinks is fueling some of the crisis in law enforcement these days. He’s frustrated that law enforcement officers are dying trying to serve and protect. He is frustrated by the unrest that has resulted from the deaths of men in Louisiana and Minnesota at the hands of law enforcement. And he has had it up to his eyeballs.

5. Myers accuses Hugley of threats, Hugley accuses Myers of bullying: Muscogee County School Board member Frank Myers has accused the City Manager Isaiah Hugley of threatening the job of a campaign volunteer who is trying to oust his sister from the board. And the city manager has accused the board member of threatening and bullying him, other board members and the superintendent. In interviews Thursday with the Ledger-Enquirer, Hugley emphatically denied the allegations from Myers, which included Hugley calling the campaign volunteer, Nathan Smith, a profane name. Smith declined to answer any questions about the dispute.
