Krispy Kreme Pop-Tarts doughnuts: Here’s my review & where you can get them in Columbus
What’s better than a warm, fresh Krispy Kreme doughnut in the morning? Well, perhaps nothing.
Except maybe a delicious and nostalgic frosted Pop-Tart, hot out of the toaster.
But what if there was a way to combine the two and blend them together, into one mega mouthwatering breakfast? Krispy Kreme Doughnuts just did that and they are calling it their “Crazy Good” collection that is “poppin’ off the new year” right.
However, the doughnuts are only here for a limited time, so hurry in and get your sweet tooth ready.
As far as if they were truly “crazy good,” well, I got to decide that for myself. Here’s my full review of the doughnuts, from the price of them to the presentation and of course, the taste.
Price
The new Pop-Tarts collection is decently priced, sitting at $18.99 for a specialty dozen. The box comes with three of each of the Pop-Tarts doughnuts and three Original Glazed.
For comparison, the regular Original Glazed dozen is $12.49, the Classic Assorted dozen is $14.49 and the Custom Assorted is $14.49.
If you want to try each one individually, the Pop-Tarts doughnuts are $2.49 per doughnut.
I chose to get the specialty dozen box, because I knew I couldn’t return home without one for everyone. Plus, you can never have too many doughnuts, am I right?
For price, I give the Pop-Tarts doughnuts a 4 out of 5. I think it’s a good deal for a dozen Krispy Kreme specialty doughnuts. Maybe not the cheapest doughnuts, but you know they are going to be good because they are Krispy Kreme.
Presentation
Each doughnut had its own look, but one of the Pop-Tarts doughnuts really exceeded my expectations as far as presentation.
Here’s what I thought:
Pop-Tarts Frosted Strawberry Doughnut
This doughnut looked the prettiest in the box, so of course my eyes naturally gravitated to it first.
It is an unglazed round doughnut with a frosted top. It is complete with crumbled shortbread pieces and a drizzle of strawberry filling, all topped with a teeny tiny Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tart. And if that isn’t enough, the doughnut has strawberry filling inside to give it that authentic and iconic Pop-Tart touch.
To me, this doughnut looked like a gourmet doughnut from your local mom-and-pop shop. It was perfectly designed and instantly reminded me of a Pop-Tart. I give this one a 5 out 5 for presentation.
Pop-Tarts Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Doughnut
This cinnamon sugar doughnut has brown sugar cinnamon creme cheese buttercream icing and is topped with a tiny Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tart.
This tasty treat is the second best executed Pop-Tart doughnut in terms of presentation, in my opinion. I could immediately tell which Pop-Tart it was inspired by, so I’ll give it a 3.5 out of 5 for presentation.
Pop-Tarts Frosted Chocolatey Fudge Doughnut
This one is unfortunately last and least for presentation.
It is described as “an Original Glazed Doughnut dipped in chocolate icing and topped with brownie batter flavored buttercream, crushed Frosted Chocolatey Fudge Pop-Tarts Bites and white nonpareils.”
However, it really just looks like one of their regular donuts on the menu, maybe just a mix of the chocolate frosted and sprinkled doughnut blended together.
I could tell it was a spin on the Frosted Chocolate Fudge Pop-Tart, but it looks a bit lackluster in terms of pizzazz and well, chocolate. I personally think it would be better if it was an all chocolate doughnut topped with fudge icing or if it was a chocolate fudge filled doughnut with all the same toppings, more like the Frosted Strawberry doughnut. Plus, where’s the cute little mini Pop-Tart?
I give this one a 2 out of 5 for presentation.
Taste
Pop-Tarts Frosted Strawberry Doughnut
Like I said in my presentation review of this doughnut, my eyes went to this one first and so did my mouth. And I was not disappointed with what my taste buds were getting.
This doughnut tasted just like its Pop-Tart companion and I was really impressed by that. It had the best strawberry flavor and the toppings were so delicious. The frosting and sprinkles were one thing, but once I got the explosion of strawberry filling, it was sugary breakfast bliss.
Chef’s kiss, seriously. I give this a 5 out 5 for taste.
Pop-Tarts Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon Doughnut
This one looked the second best, so I decided to eat it second, too. It was a good tasting first bite. I really enjoyed the buttercream icing on it, but there really isn’t much else to say about it, unfortunately. The doughnut itself is good, but I really wanted a little something more as far as taste.
I give this one a 3 out of 5.
Pop-Tarts Frosted Chocolatey Fudge Doughnut
This doughnut was already lackluster with its presentation, so I honestly wasn’t expecting much as far as taste. And I was right to do so.
Sure, it was a little chocolatey, but even just looking at it, I could tell it needed more chocolate fudge. The overall taste of the doughnut was nothing more than a normal chocolate frosted doughnut. This one really left me wanting more.
I give it a 2 out of 5.
