Two popular fast-food chicken restaurants soon will open new locations in Phenix City, Shaun Culligan, the city’s economic development manager, told the Ledger-Enquirer.

Chick-fil-A is expanding with a second location in Phenix City, and Slim Chickens is opening its first location.

“We’re very thankful that they’ve chosen to come here,” Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe told the Ledger-Enquirer. “Our economic development department has done a great job in recruiting, and it’s evident with these two organizations coming into place.”

Lowe also lauded the new commercial development that will soon house Outback Steakhouse, which the L-E reported last year.

“Outback should be opening soon, by next month at the latest,” he said.

Local Chick-fil-A franchise owner Todd Morgan is opening the new location 20 years after opening his first Chick-fil-A, he announced on Facebook.

“We’ve already shut down four times in the last four years to better our (first) facility to help serve our guests better,” Morgan told the Ledger-Enquirer. “And by opening a second store this close will allow us to be able to (provide) service at an even better quality.”

His first location has been operating at 100% capacity, he said, and the new location will help ensure the Ladonia and downtown Phenix City communities are served.

It’s expected to open around July, Morgan said. He plans to hire around 100 employees. The new construction is located in front of the Piggly Wiggly off Hwy. 280.

Slim Chickens, which built its brand on chicken tenders, also is opening a location off Hwy. 280, next to Firehouse Subs in front of America’s Thrift Stores, according to the restaurant chain’s website.

City officials are always recruiting more businesses and companies to invest in Phenix City, Lowe said. Assessed taxable properties from 2023 to 2024 grew about 14%, he said, growing from $432 million to $492 million.

“We’re actively selling our community, which is a great story to sell,” Lowe said. “When you look at our ratings, you look at our number, we are doing very, very well.”
