What do Columbus and ‘The Sopranos’ have in common? This new restaurant opening soon
A new Italian-American restaurant is opening in Columbus.
Gabagool, 1232 Broadway, a sister restaurant to The Animal Farm, 105 12th St, is expected to open in April. The new restaurant is replacing Stock Market Dueling Kitchens, which closed Dec. 27. Their owner, Bryant Walker, sold the business to Hudson Terrell, the owner of The Animal Farm and Gabagool, on Jan. 1.
Gabagool is the first-of-its-kind in downtown Columbus, bringing Italian food in a more casual, relaxed setting compared to the upscale, fine dining experience downtown has at Mabella and Trevioli.
The restaurant will serve classic Italian dishes. Terrell told the Ledger-Enquirer the inspiration behind the menu came from his passion for Italian cuisine.
“I love the idea of Italian-American style of communal and long-format dining,” Terrell said. “In the Southeast, Italian food is really like fine dining and nice restaurants. What we’re trying to do is high-quality homemade pastas, Italian sandwiches and stuff in a casual environment.”
The name “Gabagool” comes from the TV show The Sopranos, which is one of Terrell’s favorite shows. Gabagool is another name for capicola, an Italian cured meat — and it’s the favorite snack of Tony Soprano, the show’s lead character.
This location of Gabagool will be the only restaurant with the name in the country.
“We’re going to try to create a very fun and energetic atmosphere with good food and fun cocktails,” Terrell said.
