This Columbus restaurant is serving clingstone menu items to celebrate new team
The Food Mill, on Second Avenue in Columbus, has been serving locally sourced fresh produce from farms around Columbus for a few years.
The restaurant recently has drawn inspiration from the newly arrived Atlanta Braves Braves Class AA minor league baseball affiliate, the Columbus Clingstones, and have incorporated the team’s namesake in some of their dishes that are available this week.
Olivia Amos, owner of The Food Mill, said the restaurant received a shipment of clingstone peaches from Fort Valley and wanted to tie in the special with the arrival of the baseball team.
“We’ve had a lot of good response to it,” Amos told the Ledger-Enquirer.
The limited-time menu lasts until Saturday. It includes the Clingstone Classic Burger, Sweet Heat Breakfast Toast, the Summer Crunch Salad and the cucumber and tomato side salad.
Amos said The Food Mill is a strong supporter of helping local food systems strengthen and grow. She said there were several farmers to source from when The Food Mill launched in 2020, which Amos said has since increased.
Food review
“A lot of people tell us that we have one of the best burgers in town,” Amos said.
Ledger-Enquirer visual journalist Mike Haskey and I decided to grab two of the burgers from The Food Mill on Wednesday to celebrate “National Burger Day.”
However, this wasn’t your average burger. The burger featured a beef patty, lettuce, goat cheese, grilled prosciutto and grilled clingstones.
It was delicious. The patty was super juicy, with a creamy saltiness from the goat cheese and grilled prosciutto.
I was worried the clingstones would make the burger unbearably sweet, but this wasn’t the case. The clingstones provided a slight hint of sweetness, but the acidity from the peach acted as a sort of substitute to the tomato on a traditional burger.
The burger came with a cucumber salad with tomatoes and pickled red onions. The vegetables (I consider tomato a vegetable) provided a very fresh flavor that cleansed my palate between bites of the burger, allowing me to experience the full flavor with each bite.
Mike and I got a salad to split. It featured lettuce, clingstones and goat cheese. The meal was, quite possibly, the healthiest meal I’ll eat all month.
