We tried seven different doughnuts from around Columbus for National Donut Day

The amount of doughnuts consumed by journalists yearly probably could amount to the size of the Empire State Building. So, we grabbed seven doughnuts from around Columbus to celebrate National Donut Day this Friday.

We chose one doughnut from seven shops: Veri Best Donuts, Golden Donut, Columbus’s Best Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ Donuts, Tim Hortons and Parlor Doughnuts.

This isn’t a competition. We simply want to show the wide range of options available to Columbusites.

I ordered a Boston Creme-filled doughnut from Tim Hortons after asking the person who took my order for their favorite.

The doughnut was light and fluffy. It had a nice rich chocolate frosting on top with a ton of sweet cream inside that came pouring out as I bit into it.

We got the classic glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme — because what’s a doughnut review without the famous Krispy Kreme glazed donut. It was just as perfect as it’s always been.

The glaze becomes tiny little crystals as you bite into it, and it melts on your tongue. That never will cease to delight my taste buds.

The “Chocolate Chocolate Doughnut” from Parlor Doughnuts definitely was chocolatey. Does it deserve the extra “chocolate” in the name? Yes.

The fluffy dough was topped with a mound of chocolate syrup, chocolate frosting and chocolate chips. The only way to make it more chocolatey would be to put a chocolate bar on top.

The Blueberry Cake doughnut from Golden Donut tasted exactly like a mix between a blueberry muffin and Fruit Loops. The blueberry flavor was very pronounced with the sugary glaze complimenting the blueberry’s natural sweetness.

The Twist doughnut from Veri Best Donuts tasted like the classic glazed doughnut with a flavorful blast of cinnamon in each bite. As a big fan of red hots as a child (and fireball whiskey as an adult), the cinnamon flavor was a nice “twist.” The shape also was unique for a doughnut and enormous.

The Chocolate Frosted with Chocolate Sprinkles at Dunkin’ Donuts is another classic that has to be included. It features a heavy and dense dough with rich chocolate frosting and a satisfying crunch from the sprinkles.

The Sour Cream doughnut from Columbus’s Best Donuts was something I’d never tried, but I was very satisfied. The doughnut tasted similar to traditional glaze but was slightly sweeter with just a hint of tang. I definitely recommend it.

Now, after eating several doughnuts, I might need to take a hiatus from sweets for a week or two. However, I definitely suggest picking up a baker’s dozen or two and sharing them with your loved ones (or keep them to yourself; I won’t judge).

What’s life without its periodic sweet moments? And what’s food without the occasional sweet treat between courses?
