I tried McDonald’s new Spicy McMuffin in COLGA. Is it worth the money?

McDonald’s has added some heat to its breakfast menu with the debut of the spicy sausage egg & cheese McMuffin, a somewhat fiery take on the classic morning sandwich.

According to the chain, “It’s the McMuffin you love with a fiery attitude.” It’s a new take on the original, featuring the traditional sausage-egg-cheese combo, but amped up a little with a hot sausage and a jalapeño cayenne sauce.

McDonald’s promises it’s the same McMuffin you know and love and will “liven up any morning routine,” but it’s getting tepid reviews. One Redditor says, “It’s okay, nothing great. While it is actually spicy, the flavor doesn’t make it better for me. I won’t be ordering it again.”

Others say it was, “Very good. Only if you like spicy mayo-esque things,” but most of the chatter has been about the price. Here in Columbus, the price for the combo was $7.59, but even at cheaper price points, the consensus was that it wasn’t really worth the expense.

My take

This one might not be for everyone. It was spicy enough, but it didn’t feel like it was trying to ease me into the morning.

The spice level is a medium at best, and the textures compete a bit instead of blending. The creamy sauce with the melty cheese was a lot to overcome, and it was a little distracting. I found myself reaching for the OJ and water to get through it.

It’s not excellent, but its not terrible, and it’s a solid “meh” for me.

If you’re the type who puts hot sauce on everything (including breakfast), this might be the way to go. But if you’re more of a hash brown and orange juice kind of morning person, this one could feel like a little too much, too early.

This isn’t McDonald’s first attempt at spicing up tried and true items. I tried the new Cajun Chicken sandwich last year, and I liked it a lot better than the breakfast option.
