This Columbus boutique also is a hidden gem for foodies. See the local vendors
When you walk into The 706 Social, 1025 Broadway in Columbus, it’s easy to see vibrant displays of a clothing boutique up front. But if you venture to the back of the first floor, a variety of local flavor and homemade treats opens up, thanks in part to vendors like 18th Avenue Sweets.
Kristin Everett, owner of 18th Avenue Sweets, said baking is her way of giving back to her community.
“I just really enjoy making things for people,” she told the Ledger-Enquirer. “I’m not much of a cook, but I can definitely make a good cookie. So, if someone’s having a rough day, I’m like ‘I can’t fix it, but I can make something to help you eat your feelings a bit.’”
Raised in a family that loved gathering in the kitchen, Everett’s earliest memories are filled with baking alongside her mom. Originally from the Seattle area, she moved to Columbus over a decade ago, drawn by an opportunity to serve in campus ministry.
After her move, Everett began testing new recipes on college students and church friends, eventually finding her niche through creative experimentation with desserts. Baking soon outgrew her home kitchen. That’s where vending at 706 helps.
“I feel like 706 has been a good option,” she said. “Like, someone reaches out to me with, ‘Hey, what cookies do you have? Or can I get one of these?’ I can just direct them down there, which I think has given a lot of flexibility.”
Everett’s display at 706 is filled with jumbo cookies in flavors like classic chocolate chip and red velvet, as well as her signature stuffed cookies, including the best-selling “Cookie Monster.” Some of her personal favorites, such as mini cakes and cupcakes, are hidden gems.
“I wish those sold better,” she said, “but I do want to play with those more.”
Everett’s mission is deeply rooted in Columbus, where she has found a sense of belonging that shapes her business approach.
“I am staying local in Columbus intentionally because I want to be deeply rooted in this community,” she said. “I want to help people love people around them through sweets.”
Eventually, Everett wants to open her own bakery and coffee shop. But for now, being a part of the 706 community has been a successful start to her entrepreneurial journey.
