When Cinco De Mayo met Taco Tuesday, we went to this Columbus restaurant. Our review
It was a sunny day in downtown Columbus when I got the urge to eat some tacos after seeing a post from Agave Bar & Grill for a $2 taco special to celebrate Cinco De Mayo.
Knowing a good deal when I see one, it was impossible for me to not take advantage of it. So, I recruited Ledger-Enquirer visual journalist Mike Haskey to go to lunch with me and grab some tacos.
We walked down to Agave from the office and decided to each get four tacos. I got two steak and two chorizo tacos, while Mike went with two chicken and two steak tacos.
While I haven’t eaten a lot at Agave (typically just enjoying their margaritas and chips and salsa on the weekend), I have enjoyed the couple of meals I’ve eaten there.
Mike and I decided to eat at the restaurant’s outside seating area. I made sure to sit under the umbrella to not aggravate the sunburn I was nursing on my arms from sitting out in the sun too long the previous weekend.
The tacos looked magnificent when the waitress brought them out. I love the simplicity and burst of flavors when tacos are served the traditional way with cilantro and onion on top.
The steak on the tacos was really well seasoned and super juicy as I bit into the taco. The cilantro added a fresh flavor, while the onions gave a little bite to the dish. I added some lime juice and some of the green sauce (what I think was a tomatillo based salsa) to the tacos.
The sauce added a nice heat and the lime added a citrus flavor with just a nice little acidic kick. The chorizo was so good in the chorizo tacos, I felt like I could’ve sat there and eaten two pounds of the chorizo itself.
I love chorizo for its bold flavors and slight spiciness. I feel like it’s the perfect dish for someone having a bad day, because how can you be upset when eating chorizo.
I was on the clock that day, so I couldn’t have a margarita like I typically do at a Mexican restaurant when I’m off work. However, I can say from experience that the margaritas at Agave are fantastic.
I typically go for the spicy margarita made with jalapeno-infused tequila and a Tajin rim. However, I’ve also had the blackberry margarita, which was phenomenal as well.
So, if you need a place for good tacos on a Taco Tuesday or just have the hankering for some, I definitely suggest Agave.
