‘Incredibly grateful for every customer.’ This Columbus bakery sets closing date
A month after announcing its pending closure, Gigi’s Cupcakes of Columbus, at 2511-B Airport Thruway, has scheduled its final day of business.
In a Facebook post Tuesday, owner Patrick Cooper announced the bakery will close May 30. A new owner has not been announced as the next steps are “not finalized yet,” according to the post.
“Serving this community since 2012 has been such a blessing,” the post says. “We are incredibly grateful for every customer who celebrated birthdays, weddings, milestones, and everyday moments with us over the years. Your support has meant more than words can express.”
The bakery is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It’s unclear how many employees will be affected by the closure.
“Until May 30th, we’d love to see your faces, serve you one more cupcake, and celebrate the memories we’ve made together,” the post says.
Cooper did not respond to the Ledger-Enquirer’s request for comment before publication.
What happened to Gigi’s Cupcakes?
On April 25, Cooper, the owner of Gigi’s Cupcakes, announced on Facebook that the Columbus location at 2511-B Airport Thruway will be offered for sale. Once the sale is complete, the bakery will be closed, according to the post.
“For 14 years, this place has meant so much to our family. It’s been filled with early mornings, late nights, laughter, and countless memories we’ll always hold close,” the post says. “We truly believe there’s still so much life and purpose here. This is a fully equipped, turn-key bakery—perfect for a passionate home baker ready to grow, or someone looking to step into a larger, ready-to-go space.”
Cooper cited the death of his wife, Jennifer Cooper, and the unexpected changes it has brought to his family as the reason for the sale. Jennifer Cooper died in a crash with a school bus Nov. 18, 2025.
“We feel it’s time to step back and allow someone else to carry this space forward,” the post says. “While it won’t continue as a Gigi’s location after the sale, it’s ready for a new story to be written within these walls.”
Cooper later clarified that Gigi’s Cupcakes in Opelika will remain open.
“While not as convenient for our Columbus/Phenix City customers, the same great cupcakes and cakes will continue to be available in Opelika,” Cooper wrote. “We’d love the opportunity to serve you in our Opelika store!”
