I tried the newest Mexican restaurant on Broadway in Columbus. My review
If there’s one thing that can brighten my day, it’s the first bite of a delicious taco.
Needing a pick-me-up after a busy few weeks, I decided to try Tacos El Paisa, the newest Mexican restaurant to join the scene on Broadway in Columbus.
I’ve always had a weakness for quesabirria tacos because dipping juicy tacos into a consomme full of flavor brings a new sensation of joy.
I had seen posts of the new eatery, and the food looked delicious. So, Ledger-Enquirer visual journalist Mike Haskey and I took our lunch break one day and headed there to eat.
I ordered the three quesabirria tacos, cheese fries and a churro (because what’s a good meal without a little sweet treat after).
I went without my standard Diet Coke and got a lemonade to drink with my meal. Mike ordered the three tacos with rice meal.
When the food arrived, I was stunned to see how good it all looked. The quesabirria tacos had shells that didn’t seem soggy, the meat looked juicy, and the red onions and cilantro looked fresh.
When I opened the container with the consomme, I was greeted by an aromatic and hearty broth with hints of onion.
As I took the first taco and dipped it into the broth and took a bite, an explosion of oniony, slightly citrusy and fresh flavor hit my tongue.
The taco was as juicy as it looked, the freshness from the red onions and cilantro was amazing, and the cheesy layer of the taco was extremely creamy. I could eat these tacos for every meal of the day.
One of my favorite things about the restaurant is the salsa bar that had what seemed to be a chili-based and a tomatillo-based salsa. I used both on the tacos and on the seasoned chips included with the tacos.
The tomatillo-based salsa tasted great. It had an acidic flavor and was milder when it came to the heat. But my favorite was the chili-based salsa, which had an earthier flavor with some smokiness and was definitely on the spicier side.
I got the cheese fries because I’d never been to a Mexican restaurant that’s had them. The fries themselves were really good and were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
The seasoning on the fries was also really tasty. The fries were also loaded down with nacho cheese that was creamy, smooth and had a cheddar taste with a hint of spice.
Lastly, the churro was amazing. The cinnamon and sugar on it were delightful, and the dough was super light and fluffy as I bit into it.
I definitely suggest the lemonade to accompany your meal as well. The lemonade wasn’t too sweet (which is constantly an issue) and was citrusy. The drink was also huge.
So, if you need some good Mexican food, I definitely recommend Tacos El Paisa.
