Chester’s Barbecue in the Columbus Government Center is temporarily closed. Here’s why.

Chester’s Barbecue’s satellite location in the Government Center is temporarily closed for about a week, owner Toya Chester told the Ledger-Enquirer.

The location closed down last week to get a new replacement refrigerator installed, she said.

“We can’t have any of the food products in there,” Chester said. “We have to make sure they’re stored correctly.”

This closure is not expected to last long, she said, and the location will reopen once the new refrigerator is installed.

“We’ve been hoping to have it by the end of the week,” Chester said.

The locations on Northstar Drive and in Phenix City are still open, and will continue operating for the same hours Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Another satellite location at Eloquence Fashion Cafe, sells food Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Chester’s was founded in 1939 on St. Mary’s Road as a grocery store before moving to its Northstar Drive location in 1944. The business has been owned and operated by the Chester family for generations, and began selling barbecue in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s.

Chester appreciates the Government Center customers who regularly eat there for lunch, she said.

“It’s a good thing to me because people do value our food and like it,” Chester said.
