This closed Columbus grocery store is reopening with a new name

A closed supermarket in Columbus is being revived with a new name.

Foodland Grocery, a regional chain headquartered in Albertville, Alabama, is moving into the former Winn-Dixie building at 4231 Macon Road. Work is underway to prepare the site for the new tenant.

Foodland has 31 locations throughout Alabama and Tennessee. This store will be Foodland’s first expansion into Georgia, according to Foodland’s website.

Representatives from Foodland’s parent company, Mitchell Grocery Corporation, did not respond to the Ledger-Enquirer’s request for comment before publication.

The Macon Road location was one of two Winn-Dixies in the Chattahoochee Valley to close this spring, alongside another store on U.S. Highway 80 in Phenix City. Their parent company, Southeastern Grocers, cited the closure to internal decisions separate from their Aldi store conversions.

“We recognize the impact this decision has on our associates, and we are fully committed to supporting them through this transition,” Meredith Hurley, senior director of communications and community at Southeastern Grocers, told the L-E in March.
