Coronavirus in Columbus June 4: News and numbers for the Chattahoochee Valley

COVID-19 numbers in the area for June 4

GEORGIA

Muscogee County and its surrounding areas reported a total of 2,906‬ coronavirus cases in the 3 p.m. Thursday update from the Georgia Department of Public Health. This is an increase of 68 cases from Wednesday’s 3 p.m. update.

141 total deaths were reported in the area, an increase of four from Wednesday update.

Here’s a breakdown by county of total cases, deaths and hospitalizations:

  • Troup: 363, 11, 84

  • Crisp: 238, 8, 39

  • Dooly: 186, 12, 38

  • Randolph: 181, 19, 33

  • Chattahoochee: 166, 0, 6

  • Harris: 120, 6, 17

  • Macon: 104, 6, 36

  • Meriwether: 99, 2, 18

  • Marion: 59, 2, 11

  • Stewart: 54, 1, 14
  • Clay: 42, 2, 5

  • Talbot: 40, 2, 13

  • Taylor: 23, 2, 10

  • Schley: 17, 1, 7

  • Quitman: 14, 1, 4

  • Webster: 13, 1, 4

Georgia’s West-Central Health District covers 16 counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster.

Troup and Meriwether counties are not in the West-Central Health District but because of their proximity to Columbus, the Ledger-Enquirer will track those numbers as well.

ALABAMA

The number of novel coronavirus cases in Alabama has now reached 18,766 according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s dashboard at 3:40 p.m. EST Thursday.

The number of reported cases in Lee County stands at 562 while Russell County’s total stands at 181.

There have been 234,993 tests performed statewide. The state reported 651 total COVID-19-related deaths as of Thursday.

The state of Alabama now reports the number of presumed recoveries from COVID-19 on a weekly basis. On June 3, the state reported 11,395 presumed recoveries throughout Alabama.

Protests could cause a rise in COVID-19 cases, GA health official says

Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey told reporters Tuesday there’s a risk COVID-19 cases could rise in the wake of statewide protests against police brutality and racism.

In addition to the risks that come with large gatherings, Toomey added that people participating in these protests could be coming from other states where COVID-19 infection rates might be higher. Those people could infect others in Georgia, she said.

Auburn football has its plan for resuming offseason workouts

Auburn plans to begin organized offseason workouts as early as Monday, pending any interruptions.

That’s according to Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn, who discussed the team’s plan over a Zoom call with media Tuesday. The Tigers’ novel coronavirus testing protocol is a comprehensive one.
