‘She had a bad vibe’: Police arrest girlfriend of Kendrick High School murder victim

The 19-year-old woman arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Javion Shorter was his girlfriend, Shorter’s mother said in an interview with the Ledger-Enquirer on Monday.

Shorter, a senior at Kendrick High School, was shot Nov. 17 at the Ballard Way Apartments on Hunter Road. Police found his body in a stairwell in the building. It was his 18th birthday.

Shorter’s mother, Tangi , said he and his girlfriend, Nashira Kendra Miller, had gotten into an argument before the incident.

“He found out that she was going behind his back seeing her baby daddy when she said she wasn’t,” his mother said Monday, “and that’s what the whole argument was about.”

Police recently arrested Nashira Kendra Miller, the girlfriend of 18-year-old Kendrick High School senior Javion Shorter, in connection with his death.

After arguing, Shorter walked Miller to the apartment, where he was shot, his mother said. On Nov. 19, he died at the hospital from the injuries, leaving behind a 19-month-old daughter.

So Tangi Shorter wasn’t surprised when police arrested Miller in connection with the death, along with her baby’s father, 19-year-old Daijon Dawayne Williams.

“I didn’t really know her very well,” the mother said of her son’s girlfriend. “I just didn’t like her from the beginning. ... Her vibe wasn’t right; she had a bad vibe.”

On Tuesday, police arrested a third suspect, 17-year-old Javon Quindarious McClendon. He is scheduled to appear in Columbus Recorder’s Court at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Tangi Shorter said she doesn’t know McClendon or how he’s connected to the case. She believes he’s a friend of Williams.

She’s just glad police caught the suspects and she hopes they get life without parole.

“I appreciate the Columbus police department and detectives on the case,” she said. “But I’m not going to be satisfied until justice is done, because my son is not coming back.”
