A family member of the woman who died in the Muscogee County Jail this week has accused jail staff of mistreatment, but the sheriff’s office is refuting the claim.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation told the Ledger-Enquirer it’s investigating the death of 41-year-old Jennifer Nicole McFay, who died Monday. The GBI said McFay was housed in a single-occupant cell at the Muscogee County Jail at time of her death.

Amanda Johnson, a cousin of McFay’s, reposted allegations on Facebook that McFay needed medical attention before her death and didn’t receive it. Johnson’s post, which originated from McFay’s daughter, said McFay passed out three times while detained and didn’t receive any medical attention.

The post also claims McFay fell and busted her head open the night before she died.

Sheriff’s office responds

When asked about the allegations, Sheriff Greg Countryman said “the post that was posted is 100% false.” The sheriff’s office operates the jail.

“As sheriff, I take my responsibility seriously,” Countryman said in a statement. “This is the reason for doing follow-up investigations when these types of incidents happen. My heart goes out to any family who has to wear the garments of bereavement. As the facts come forward, I am confident that there was no foul play or ignoring a person’s calls for help.

“This is not the time to superimpose a matter that requires a calm head to gather the facts of the reason for a loss of life. May the Lord comfort this family to give them peace, comfort, and understanding.”

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan previously told the Ledger-Enquirer no foul play is suspected in McFay’s death.

Bryan said McFay was in jail on charges of cruelty to children and simple battery.

A GBI medical examiner will conduct an autopsy as part of the investigation, the GBI said. No further details were made available.
