Phenix City police officer, single father dies. Fundraiser helping family.
A Phenix City police officer who was battling cancer as a single father has died.
The Ledger-Enquirer reported last week Officer Luke Bailey was hospitalized and an online account at GoFundMe.com was raising money to help pay for his medical expenses and to support his 13-year-old daughter.
Bailey, whose full name was Lucas Hunter Bailey, died Monday at Piedmont Columbus Regional’s midtown hospital with his family by his side, according to his obituary. He was 33.
The funeral will be Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 3738 Hwy. 431 N in Phenix City.
As of Wednesday morning, $14,428 from 164 donations has been raised toward the $25,000 goal since the GoFundMe account for Bailey was established Aug. 28.
The Phenix City Police Department posted the following statement on its Facebook page Wednesday:
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our friend and brother in blue, Officer Luke Bailey. This loss is felt deeply by all of us here at the Phenix City Police Department.
“Officer Bailey wasn’t just a great officer — he was a kind soul, a steady teammate, and someone who always looked out for others. His smile, his dedication, and the way he cared for this community will never be forgotten.
“Please keep his family, friends, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Officer Bailey, thank you for your service and for the memories you leave behind. You will be deeply missed.”
