Columbus Airport main runway set to reopen. What this means for travelers

The Columbus Airport’s primary runway will reopen Nov. 28 after being closed for construction since August, airport director Amber Clark told the Ledger-Enquirer.

Scheduled to reopen a day after Thanksgiving, travelers now can book flights from and to Columbus on the Delta Air Lines website, Clark said.

“This new runway represents a significant long-term investment for Columbus,” she said. “It will enhance safety, improve operational efficiency and help drive economic development for years to come.”

Over the past few months, construction on the runway has faced only minor setbacks that did not significantly impact the project, Clark said, such as the on-site water used for mixing concrete being outside the approved temperature range.

This issue quickly was resolved by installing a chiller, she said. No delays have stalled the project, Clark said.

“This success can be attributed to Summers Concrete’s exceptional preparation, including maintaining adequate staffing and subcontractor support, stocking at least half of the required materials onsite in advance, and ensuring that all necessary equipment was available with redundancies in place in the event of mechanical failure,” she said.

Along with offering Delta flights, Clark is optimistic more airlines will come to Columbus.

“We have been in active discussions with a low-cost carrier interested in introducing two new routes, offering twice-weekly service from Columbus,” she said.

Proposed fares from this airline are expected to be “highly competitive,” Clark said. Strong travel demand in the community consistently will fill the flights, she said, and the two destinations under consideration align with the top outbound markets for local travelers.

The airport is in the design phase for the renovation of Taxiway D, the General Aviation Terminal and the Rental Car Wash Facility, Clark said. They also are preparing to begin the airport’s master plan, a comprehensive 20-year outlook for future development of the Columbus Airport.

“This process will include active engagement with our stakeholders and members of the community to ensure that the plan reflects the shared vision and needs of all who rely on the airport,” Clark said.
