Troopers investigate second fatal car crash on Valentine’s Day in Columbus area

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating a car crash that killed a Camp Hill man on Valentine’s Day.

At 10:08 p.m. Saturday, Marcus S. Edwards, 44, was fatally injured when the 2013 Dodge Durango he was driving left the roadway on U.S. Highway 280 near the 97-mile marker, approximately eight miles west of Auburn in Lee County, ALEA said in a news release Sunday.

The Durango struck a ditch and the rear end of a 2020 Volvo tractor-trailer, which was off the roadway. The Durango caught on fire and became engulfed in flames, according to ALEA.

Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene, ALEA said. The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn’t injured, ALEA spokesman Capt. Jeremy Burkett told the Ledger-Enquirer.

No further information about the crash was available.

This is the second fatal crash in the Chattahoochee Valley on Saturday that ALEA is investigating. The first one resulted in the death of a Columbus woman.
