Here’s what is open, and what will be closed in Columbus on Juneteenth. What about trash pickup?
President Joe Biden signed legislation in 2021 to make Juneteenth a federal holiday — the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1983.
The holiday falls on a Friday this year and marks the day in 1865 when, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops announced that the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were free.
Because it is a federal holiday, it will affect the operating hours of a lot of offices and agencies.
