One suspect arrested, another still wanted in April homicide on Cusseta Road

One man was arrested Monday and another remains at large in a fatal April shooting in Columbus.

Around 8:30 p.m. Monday, Columbus police arrested 23-year-old Tyshaun Sylvester following a standoff with officers, according to a release from the Columbus Police Department. The standoff occurred at a residence near Muscogee Drive and Lenox Drive.

Sylvester had an active arrest warrant in the April 18 shooting of Quincy Atkins on Cusseta Road. Atkins was found with multiple gunshot wounds after he crashed a Dodge Charger into a house on Cusseta Road around 5 p.m.

Atkins was rushed to the emergency room at Piedmont Columbus Regional where he was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m., according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

Additional charges are pending for Sylvester who is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court on May 7 at 9 a.m.

A second suspect in the homicide, Jessie Harper, 23, also has an active arrest warrant and is still at large, police say. He may be armed and is considered dangerous.

Anyone with any information on Harper’s location is asked to call 911. Anyone with any additional information about the homicide is asked to contact Detective Jason Carden at 706-225-4395 or by e-mail at jcarden@columbusga.org.
