6th man arrested in fatal Columbus park shooting. Latest suspect found several states away

A sixth suspect has been arrested in a fatal shooting at Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center, the Columbus Police Department announced Tuesday morning.

Dominick Gill, 20, was found and detained by U.S. Marshals in Philadelphia Monday, the Columbus Police Department said in a news release. He is awaiting extradition to Columbus and will be charged with murder and armed robbery.

Gill joins 20-year-old Elijah Smith, 21-year-old Cortez Turner, 18-year-old Christopher Culler, 20-year-old JaMorris Baker and 18-year-old Navaris Johnson as the suspects accused of killing Jacarie Charles at the recreation center, according to CPD.

Charles, 22, was shot and killed the afternoon of Aug. 29, according to CPD. Police said a suspect vehicle was found the day of the shooting and multiple people were detained and interviewed.

About a week later, Johnson was identified as the shooter, CPD said. Warrants were issued for his arrest, and other suspects were identified in the following weeks.

Smith, Turner and Culler are charged with murder and armed robbery, CPD said.

Johnson has been charged with murder, aggravated assault and possessing a gun during the commission of a crime, CPD said.

Baker has been charged with murder and aggravated assault, according to CPD.

The U.S. Marshals Service shared a post to X just before 5:45 p.m. to announce Gill’s arrest.

Columbus police didn’t immediately respond to questions about Gill’s involvement in the shooting or whether he has ties to Philadelphia.

The shooting and its fallout have prompted Columbus Councilor Toyia Tucker to seek local legislative change, asking for a ban on carrying weapons inside recreation centers. The Columbus Council approved Tucker’s request, though state law would need to be amended to enforce it.
