Two injured in second shooting in five months at Columbus recreation center
A shooting Sunday at a Columbus recreation center left two injured, according to a post on the Columbus Police Department’s X page.
The shooting occurred at the Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center, 5025 Steam Mill Road, according to the post. The post says CPD’s Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation.
Police are asking anyone with information on the case to call 911.
Previous shooting at Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center
This incident marks the second shooting at the location within the past five months.
In August, a shooting at the recreation center ended in the death of 22-year-old Jacarie Charles, the Ledger-Enquirer reported. The rec center was closed for the week following the shooting, according to Columbus Councilor Toyia Tucker of District 4 at the time.
Six suspects were arrested in connection with Charles’ death, the Ledger-Enquirer reported. The shooting led Tucker to seek local legislative change, asking for a ban on carrying weapons inside recreation centers.
Tucker’s request was approved by the Columbus Council, but state law would need to be changed by the Georgia Legislature for it to take effect.
