The Ledger-Enquirer has compiled a searchable database that lists the salaries for employees of the Harris County School District.

It includes the annual approved salaries as of Dec. 14. School district salaries are public information and can be obtained through a request under the Georgia Open Records Act.

The database comprises salaries for 772 employees, excluding four part-time 4-H workers. The average of those salaries is $45,714.35. But to filter out the effect of outliers (extremely high or low salaries), a better way to compare the school district salaries to the typical resident of Harris County is to use the median salary. That’s the figure at the midpoint of the range, which in HCSD is from a low of $11,340 for a food assistant to a high of $179,015 for superintendent Roger Couch.

So the median of those salaries is $47,279.

The median household income in Harris County is $76,319, and per-person income is $36,273, according to the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the latest year available. Over the same period, Georgia’s per-person income was $31,067 and the median household income was $58,700. In the United States, per-person income was $34,103 and the median household income was $62,843.

Further filtering the HCSD database to exclude bus drivers and monitors, the remaining 676 employees earn an average salary of $50,052.52 and a median salary of $52,978.

All HCSD salaries are in the database linked to this story file. Fourteen of them earn at least $100,000 per year. They are:

  • Roger Couch, superintendent, $179,015
  • Justin Finney, assistant superintendent for business services and technology, $123,562
  • David Dennie, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, $120,421
  • Jesse Ward, senior army instructor, $119,470
  • Tyler Dunn, principal of Harris County High School (shifted duties as of March 1 to be the coordinator of the new HCHS Science and Technology Center, which is being developed in the former Harris County Carver Middle School), $115,597
  • Shelia Baker, assistant superintendent for support services, $113,662
  • Stacey Carlisle, assistant superintendent for human resources, $113,662
