New superintendent appointed for Phenix City Schools, selected among 4 finalists

The Phenix City Board of Education has appointed Nathan Walters as the new superintendent of Phenix City Schools, PCS announced Friday.

The decision was made by a majority vote during the board’s meeting Thursday night, the news release says without disclosing how each of the seven board members voted. The Ledger-Enquirer asked for that information and will update this story when it is received.

Walters, who has been interim superintendent since Janet Sherrod retired at the end of last year, has more than 25 years of experience in PCS. He was assistant superintendent for administration and operations (2024-26) and has worked as a teacher, reading coach, assistant principal, coordinator and director.

He also has overseen departments such as maintenance and operations, transportation, child nutrition, school safety, athletics, extracurricular programs, student health care, human resources and student services.

“I am looking forward to creating opportunities for everyone to let their light shine,” Walters said in the news release. “It’s not just a phrase but an invitation for everyone to step into their purpose. I believe we can change the world by developing one future leader at a time.”

Walters thanked the school system’s employees for their work. He also thanked the board for the opportunity to serve and lead PCS.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” he said. “Our staff from child nutrition, maintenance and teachers all play a part. They are the real winners.”

PCBOE chairwoman Yolaunda Daniel explained why the majority of the board chose Walters among the four finalists who were interviewed.

“The board selected a leader we believe is the right fit for our district and community,” she said in the news release. “Mr. Walters understands the culture of Phenix City Schools and has the vision to continue moving our district forward. We are excited about the future and look forward to working together.”

The other finalists were:

  • Casey Chambley, former superintendent of Chambers County School District
  • Reeivice Girtmans, former superintendent of Ozark City Schools
  • Michael Robinson, former superintendent of the Stewart County School District.

The next step is contract negotiations between Walters and the board.

“Once those talks are finished,” the news release says, “the board will meet again to officially vote on and sign the contract.”
