If you had a local bucket list …
When you go somewhere you’ve never been, you often have a list of places you want to visit.
I was in Washington D.C. over a week ago — not on vacation — but didn’t have time or the right weather to do more than what my children commanded: They wanted a picture of the White House.
Check.
In a little over two weeks, I’ll no longer live in the Chattahoochee Valley. I’ve accepted the executive editor position with The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C. My first day is May 31, so I have two columns left after this one. Let’s get this straight, this isn’t my goodbye.
This is my … what do I want to do before I leave?
If you had two weeks left here, what would you do?
At the top of my list are, of course, restaurants I have to visit.
Dinglewood, Mike & Ed’s, El Vaquero and 11th and Bay are at the top of my list, although I’m told I need to add a trip to Gus’s. Chili Thai, Trevioli’s and a night at The Loft are up there, too. I’m certain I’ll gain 5-10 sympathy pounds along the way.
I’ve never taken my husband to Hunter’s Pub, so I’m planning to do that this weekend. He’ll probably be upset that I’ve hidden this gem from him the entire time he’s lived here.
After food, I know I want to schedule time for a few more RiverWalk runs and perhaps another shot at SUP yoga on the Chattahoochee River. I’d like to spend some time with my kids on the splash pad and give them a chance to play on the new downtown playground on Bay Avenue.
We’ll likely catch another downtown concert in between painting the walls of our house.
Those are just a few of the things we want to do. Of course we’ll see family and friends, but it’s those “must-do” activities that have me making a list.
I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything, so I went to TripAdvisor’s things to do in Columbus list.
I’ve, of course, been to the National Infantry Museum and the National Civil War Naval Museum. My kids — ages 8 and 6 — aren’t old enough, I don’t think, to truly appreciate either of these places.
I’ve been whitewater rafting and zip lining. The entire family will have to do the whitewater course in a few years when the kids are both old enough. We’ve been to the RiverCenter and Springer Opera House for shows.
The one place we haven’t been that I wish we would have is Oxbow Meadows, but my kids will be here at least a few weeks after I initially leave. They may have a chance next month. And then there’s Providence Canyon, which I’m told is lovely, but maybe the warmer months aren’t the right time.
We’ll be back in the area multiple times because most of my family lives here, so we don’t have to cross everything off the list in just a few weeks.
But I’d be interested in knowing your Chattahoochee Valley bucket list. What would you do that you haven’t? What would you make sure you did one more time?
