‘Just fell out of the sky.’ Chunk of concrete strikes driver on Utah highway, cops say
Sharon Cockayne never saw it coming.
A chunk of concrete “bigger than a softball” crashed through her car’s windshield the evening of Nov. 1 on a Utah highway, slamming into her face, the Midvale woman told KSTU.
“Generally, if something is coming at you, at your windshield, you see it,” Cockayne told KSL. “This one, I just didn’t see coming.”
Cockayne managed to pull to the side of Interstate 215 near Taylorsville after being hit about 5 p.m. Nov. 1, according to the station. The source of the concrete remains unknown.
“I mean, it literally just fell out of the sky,” Cockayne told KSTU. She suffered cuts and a broken cheekbone.
In a Facebook post on the incident, Utah Highway Patrol officers said the chunk of concrete could have fallen off a passing truck.
“Please remember to secure your load or cover it if you have small items that could get loose,” officers wrote. “If you see debris on our roadways call 911. … Items get hit by tires and can really go anywhere.”
Taylorsville is about 9 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
