Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson names nominee to be next city manager
At the end of Tuesday night’s Columbus Council meeting, Mayor Skip Henderson recommended Tyson Begly to be the next city manager.
Begly is an executive, community leader and former councilor, Henderson said. He also has more than 20 years of experience in finance, operations, technology, strategic planning and public service, Henderson said.
The council has at least two weeks before they vote on the nominee.
The city manager position became vacant last year after the council fired Isaiah Hugley, following an investigation into the Columbus Finance Department.
This nomination comes after Henderson came under fire for pausing the city manager search at the end of 2025.
The 10-member council appointed Begly to the citywide District 10 seat in April 2023 to fill the remainder of John House’s four-year term until the May 2024 election after House resigned to spend more time with his ailing wife.
Follow the custom for appointed councilors, Begly agreed to not run for the seat when it came up for election. The custom is in order to avoid having an unfair advantage as an unelected incumbent against other candidates. Travis Chambers defeated John Anker in a runoff to fill the position.
Begly chaired the Columbus Public Safety Commission through the merger of the marshal’s office with the sheriff’s office. He also chaired the Columbus Charter Review Commission and served on the Development Authority of Columbus.
He was CFO and COO of Delta Data, which provides back-end solutions for mutual funds, before it was acquired by TAP Software Holdings in 2021. He now is CFO of Highline, a rural fiber broadband company headquartered in West Point, Georgia.
