Here are the Phenix City and Smiths Station candidates on the 2020 election ballots
The qualifying period to be on the Aug. 25 ballots for 2020 Alabama municipal elections has ended. Here are the Phenix City and Smiths Station candidates campaigning for mayor, council and school board:
Phenix City
In addition to elections for mayor and city council, the school board is becoming an elected governing body. Phenix City voters approved a referendum in 2018 to take that authority away from the city council, which has been appointing the school board members.
The appointed school board members are all at-large positions, meaning they represent the entire city, not one of the three voting districts. The elected school board still will have seven members, but only one of them will be an at-large seat. The other six will represent one of the three voting districts, two per district.
The Rev. Brady Baird is the only school board member running to remain on the board.

Smiths Station doesn’t have its own school board. The city’s schools are governed by the Lee County Board of Education. Its next election will be on the Nov. 3 ballot.
To vote in the Aug. 25 election, residents must be a registered voter by Aug. 10. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Aug. 20. Both can be done on the Alabama Secretary of State’s website.
