Third candidate emerges for seat on Muscogee County School District Board

A third candidate has emerged for a seat on the Muscogee County School District Board in Columbus.

Joshua Smith filed Tuesday his declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions as a candidate for the nine-member board’s District 8 seat.

The Ledger-Enquirer didn’t reach Smith for comment before publication. He lists himself as chairman of his campaign and Sarah Smith as his treasurer.

The two other declared candidates in the 2026 MCSD board elections are Robert Roth and Mark Cantrell (incumbent) in District 6.

Election day for the nonpartisan local offices of mayor, city council and school board in Columbus is May 19. No candidate is official until the March 2-6 qualifying period ends.

The other incumbents in the MCSD board’s seats up for election this year — Nickie Tillery of District 2, Naomi Buckner of District 4, Margot Schley of District 8 and Kia Chambers of countywide District 9 — haven’t announced whether they will seek re-election.
