A “loving” dog lost his leg after he was hit by a car — then came a heartwarming adoption.

Tricky recovered from his injuries in Alabama before moving to Wisconsin, where a family fell for him.

“They loved him right away,” 2nd Chance Shelter in Boaz, Alabama, wrote March 20 on Facebook. “How wonderful is that!”

The 2-year-old pup is “thriving” in his new home after he experienced a rough patch. A driver hit him, and “no one was going to take him to get vet care.” Tricky eventually got treatment with help from an animal control officer and a good Samaritan, the shelter wrote on social media and in an email to McClatchy News.

“When his family declined to cover his medical bills, they surrendered him to animal control,” office administrator Teresa Camp wrote in the email. “Mary Harris, an animal advocate, volunteered to pay for his treatment. Sadly, Tricky’s leg couldn’t be saved, and amputation was required.”

As he started his journey toward recovery in December, Tricky showed “gratitude.” He became known as a “friendly and loving dog” who didn’t have trouble adjusting to his new life on three legs.

Then in February, Tricky was transferred to Second Chance North in Ripon, Wisconsin. The animal organization, a roughly 75-mile drive northeast from Madison, hoped he would find a “fun loving family.”

“He is so ready for his happily ever after,” the group wrote in a Facebook post. “Tricky is a tripod…but don’t you dare think that slows this happy go lucky fella down. He LOVES going for walks, handles stairs no problem. Pretty much anything the other dogs can do, Tricky knows he can do it better!!”

After about one month of waiting for a home, the Alabama shelter shared the good news that he was adopted.

“Go enjoy your second chance in life Tricky,” the animal organization wrote. “You so deserve it. See Tricky. Dreams do come true!”

Boaz, Alabama, is a roughly 65-mile drive northeast from Birmingham.
