These Georgia doughnut shops rank among the best in the nation. Here’s why
If you like your treats glazed or jelly-filled, Georgia might be the place for you.
That’s because the state is home to six of the nation’s best spots for doughnuts, new rankings show.
The restaurant review website Yelp said it came up with the list of “Top 100 US Donut Shops” after it studied dessert places across the country. It considered “a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews.”
Of the Georgia shops that earned recognition, Ray’s Donuts in Marietta landed on top with the No. 10 spot on the list. Also in the rankings:
Sarah Donuts in Roswell at No. 64
Sweet Apple Donut & Coffee in Alpharetta at No. 70
Holey Sweet Donuts in Stockbridge at No. 73
Scream’n Nuts in Alpharetta at No. 76
Mcdoughnuts in McDonough at No. 95
The list was released ahead of National Doughnut Day, which falls on Friday, June 3. To celebrate, Krispy Kreme and other chains are offering free sweets to customers.
On Yelp’s list, Ray’s Donuts was the favorite in Georgia. Some people in their reviews said they couldn’t get enough of the family-run shop’s tasty doughnut flavors and customer service, helping it to earn five out of five stars.
“This old-school donut shop sticks to the classics and does them really well,” Yelp said in its May 25 report. “Atlanta-area residents flock to Ray’s for traditional favorites such as glazed, cream-filled, and buttermilk-infused donuts, old-fashioneds, Long Johns (large rectangular donuts), cinnamon buns, apple fritters, and lemon-filled jelly donuts.”
The shop said it makes its doughnuts fresh each day from its location in Marietta, roughly 25 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
The other five Peach State favorites on Yelp’s list were also near the state capital, which is home to restaurants that have been named among the “most outstanding” in the world, McClatchy News reported.
Overall, the nation’s top-ranking place for doughnuts was Round Rock Donuts, outside of Austin, Texas. Also making the top five were shops in California, North Carolina, Florida and Arizona.
