Some GA Walmart customers can now order items by drone. Here’s where, how it works
Delivery service in Georgia is going high-tech. Walmart has officially started flying orders to customers via drone delivery in a new service launching in some parts of the state.
The service will deliver your small order by drone in just a few minutes as long as you meet some criteria.
The GA service area
Although West Central Georgia isn’t eligible yet, the new program is launching in a few stores in metro Atlanta.
Walmart has already been testing similar deliveries in places like Dallas–Fort Worth and Bentonville, Arkansas. Atlanta is the first Georgia market to get the expansion.
How the service works
Once you’ve placed your order, a Walmart worker loads the items onto an automated drone which will drop your order to a designated area on your property.
- Eligible customers must download and order through the Wing app
- You can shop from a list of qualifying Walmart items
- In the app, you confirm a specific drop-off spot on the property
- The drone flies at around 60 mph and roughly 150 feet up before
- It will lower the package to the pre-determined spot on a tether with no in-person handoff
Typical flight time for delivery is about 5 minutes or less and the full process often takes under 20 minutes, depending on distance and demand.
Wing drones can generally serve addresses within about a 6-mile radius of a participating Walmart, a range meant to cover nearby neighborhoods clustered around each store
What you can order
Drone deliveries are designed for light-weight, quick-need items rather than a full weekly grocery stock-up.
Eligible items include:
- Select groceries
- Over-the-counter medicines
- Household essentials
- Last-minute gifts that fit within the weight restrictions
Unfortunately, not every Georgia Walmart can use drone delivery yet and service is limited to specific zones near the participating metro Atlanta stores. If you’d like to check to see if your area is eligible or to see a list of participating stores, visit the Walmart drone delivery page.
If you’d like to join a waitlist to be considered for future expansion, plug your address into Wing’s waitlist site. The companies are using these requests to gauge interest for future stores.
