Columbus has big news for local filmmakers. Here’s how your movie can get made

Filmmakers in the Chattahoochee Valley aiming to bring local stories to life now have more time and resources to help get their projects funded.

The Columbus Film Office has announced an expanded round of the Local Filmmaker Grant Program for 2026. The grant will increase the financial backing available to local storytellers, providing a clearer path for creatives and filmmakers.

The extended program will not only ease financial constraints but could boost visibility for talent that might otherwise struggle to get noticed.

Program details

The 2026 iteration is up from smaller awards and reflects local leaders’ intent to invest more heavily in the community’s creative economy. This initiative will help independent directors, producers and writers budget and produce films that showcase our community.

Highlights:

  • Five grants of $10,000 each to filmmakers based in the region
  • 20% upfront
  • 60% at principal photography
  • 20% on delivery

Eligibility:

  • Muscogee County residents or areas within a 50-mile radius
  • 18 or older 
  • Practicing filmmakers with three or more years of festival/distribution credits
  • Applicants may qualify for only one grant every other year.

Film requirements:

  • 80% of the production days must be filmed in Muscogee County.
  • 70% of the cast and crew must be Muscogee County residents.
  • 50% of vendors must be Muscogee County businesses. 
  • Film Project will need to be shown in a Columbus Film Festival

How to apply

The deadline for application is Feb. 28, Projects must start shooting within 120 days of approval. The finished work must be delivered in 180 days.

Applicants should prepare:

  • A project proposal outlining the concept, creative team, budget and timeline
  • Sample work or previous reels (if available)
  • A clear distribution or screening strategy, even if local or festival-focused

Film Columbus is hosting a Columbus Creators Mixer on Feb. 19, from 6-8:30 p.m. at The Loft, 1032 Broadway, to offer additional information available on the grant.
