Severe weather forecast prompts school, athletics changes in the Columbus area

The weather forecast for the Columbus area, predicting a chance of snow and freezing rain from Thursday night into Saturday, has prompted the Muscogee County School District to announce changes to its sports schedule:

The following boys and girls high school basketball games were moved to Thursday:

  • Columbus at Shaw
  • Central Carroll at Northside
  • Spencer at Kendrick
  • Carver at Hardaway.

The Sumter County at Jordan boys and girls basketball games also were moved to Monday.

The MCSD middle school swim meet was moved to Thursday.

MCSD announced Thursday that it will observe regular operating hours on Friday. Columbus State University is also planning to operate as normal on Friday, spokesperson Michael Tullier told the Ledger-Enquirer

The West Central Health District will delay its opening until 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Chattahoochee Valley Community College announced it will close Friday in “an abundance of caution.”

Columbus Technical College closes

Columbus Technical College will close on Friday and Saturday. All classes and activities for those days will be canceled.

Georgia Military College closes

Georgia Military College closed its main campus, prep school and all satellite locations across the state on Friday. This includes locations in areas expecting minimal winter weather because the institution’s closure will impact its ability to provide essential support to those locations.

Harris County makes changes for Friday

Harris County School District canceled all operations for Friday because of the potential for freezing rain and icy road conditions, according to a Thursday news release. Further updates will be available on the HCSD website and social media platforms.

Recent forecasts show that Columbus could get freezing rain which could mix with sleet or snow Friday morning before turning to rain Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
