Spencer wrestling captures Area 2-2A title
The Spencer High School wrestling team showed its strength in the 2-2A area tournament, taking the title thanks to seven individual champions, two runners-up and three third-place finishers.
Malik Hardy, Isaiah Arredondo, Izaiah Thompson, Nick Harris, Amani Bryd, Onaje Wheat and Michael Jones take home victories in their finals matches. Antravious Heard and Bryce Webster made it to finals maches, with Heard taking second in the 145-pound match and Webster finishing second in 182.
Thomas Hardy, Jaquan Wingfield and Johknotter Hill took their place in their respective weight classes.
“We had our best week of practice leading up to the championship because we had all of our wrestlers back healthy for the first time since December,” Spencer head coach Robert Sanders said. “Onaje Wheat, Michael Jones, Bryce Webster and Antravious Heard didn't wrestle at the City Championships because they were still not 100 percent. With area the next week, I wanted them to be at their best.”
The Greenwave wrestle in sectionals Saturday at Toombs County. Based on the latest performance, Sanders is confident in his team’s chances.
“I feel like we are peaking at the right time,” Sanders said. “Hopefully, we can do well and send a good group of wrestlers to state.”
