Smiths Station, Central show out at state indoor track meet

The Smiths Station track team needs to clear some room in its trophy case after this weekend’s state indoor track meet in Birmingham.

The Smiths Station boys and girls combined for four first-place finishes at the Indoor State Championships this weekend. The strong performances by the male and female athletes helped Smiths Station take sixth place in the Class 7A boys division and eighth in the girls.

It was no surprise that senior Alonie Sutton was responsible for two of Smiths Stations’ first-place finishes in the finals. She once again took first place in the long jump competition then won the the triple jump, where she bested teammate Kennedy Brown.

Charles Hughes took home first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.97. The Panthers’ 4x800 relay team brought home the fourth and final victory when they clocked in at 7:58.51.

Central High School also participated in the weekend’s events, with the girls taking ninth place and the boys finishing 10th. Central had two third-place finishes in finals events thanks to the efforts of the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.
