Carver clobbers Westover, clinches second in region, will host first-round playoff game
The Carver Tigers played what their head coach called their best game of the year Monday night as they clobbered Westover 44-13 at Kinnett Stadium, clinching second place in Region 1-AAAA, which means they will host a first-round state playoff game.
So the outcome of their regular-season finale, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Americus-Sumter, won’t affect their standing in the region, because they can’t catch first-place Cairo and none of the other teams can catch them.
Carver improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the region. Westover fell to 6-4 and 4-3. They played Monday night because their originally scheduled game was postponed due to Hurricane Michael.
“We’re excited to clinch that second seed and lock up the home-field advantage,” said Carver coach Corey Joyner.
The Tigers led the entire game, highlighted by Joyner’s son, senior quarterback Jaylen Joyner, who threw four touchdown passes: two to junior Jacyais Credle and one apiece to seniors Jarius Thomas and Kevon Taylor.
Junior running back Khiari McCoy scored two touchdowns, one on a kickoff return and the other rushing. Junior defensive back Ja’Corey Harper set up one of Carver’s scores with an interception.
“Defense played lights out,” Joyner said. “It definitely was a team effort. Our guys came out focused.”
