Closer look at Friday night's high school football games
SPENCER VS. CARVER
Where: A. J. McClung Memorial Stadium
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Records: Spencer 0-0 (1-9 last season). Carver 1-0.
Series: Carver leads 39-12-1, having won 16 straight Carver won 44-13 last season. The last Spencer win came in 1998.
Last week: Season-opener for Spencer. Carver beat Carver-Atlanta 28-24.
You need to know: This is the first game for Pierre Coffey as head coach at Spencer. He spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Carver. Carver opened the season with a thrilling come-from-behind win over Carver-Atlanta on Saturday. Quarterback Jawon Pass hit Jacolby Cunningham on a 72-yard pass in the final two minutes to rally the Tigers.
SHAW VS. NORTHGATE
Where: Kinnett Stadium
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Records: Shaw 1-0. Northgate 0-0 (6-4 last season).
Series: Northgate leads 1-0 after a 35-22 win last season in Newnan.
Last week: Shaw beat Luella 39-14. Season opener for Northgate.
You need to know: Shaw QB B.J. Knight passed for 208 yards and three TDs in the win over Luella. Nick Beason caught four passes for 119 yards and rushed for another 46. Sydarrian Cobb led the Raiders with 79 yards rushing. Northgate returns a pair of rushers in Ton Evans and Kyle Cater, who ran for 1,296 yards and 1,024 yards, respectively, according to the Newnan Times.
PACELLI AT MOUNT DE SALES
Where: Sister Elizabeth Lowman Stadium, Macon, Ga.
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Records: Pacelli 0-0 (7-4 last season). Mount De Sales 0-0 (4-6 last season).
Series: Pacelli leads 9-3, including a 44-10 win last season. Mount de Sales' last win came in 1973.
Last week: Both were idle.
You need to know: This will be the first game as head coach for Pacelli's Alan Griffin. He takes over for Randy Grace, who rebuilt the program. The Vikings went 7-4 each of the past two seasons. The Vikings return Ledger-Enquirer Dandy Dozen team member DeAndre Bowman. Mount de Sales has had three straight losing seasons, 2-9 in 2012 followed by 3-8 and 4-6.
MILLER COUNTY AT MARION COUNTY
Where: Eagle Stadium, Buena Vista, Ga.
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Records: Miller County 0-0 (2-8 last season). Marion County 0-0 (12-1 last season).
Series: Marion County leads 2-1, including a 40-0 win last season. Marion also won 54-0 in 2013. Miller won 20-7 in 2012.
Last week: Both were idle.
You need to know: Mike Swaney has led Marion County to a 55-8 record in six seasons, including the 2013 Class A-public school state championship. The Eagles are led by Ledger-Enquirer Dandy Dozen team member Lorenzo Smothers.
CALVARY CHRISTIAN AT FULLINGTON
Where: Pinehurst, Ga.
When: Today, 7:30 p.m.
Records: Calvary Christian 1-0. Fullington 0-1.
Series: Calvary Christian leads 1-0 with a 42-27 victory last season.
Last week: Calvary Christian opened its season with a 62-7 rout of Young Americans Christian School. Fullington Academy lost to Community Christian 35-21.
You need to know: Anthony Santiago (111) and Jacquez Green (109) both rushed for more than 100 yards in the win over Young Americans. Santiago scored two TDs as did Tredwick Wilburn. Green added another.
HARRIS COUNTY AT CENTRAL
Where: Garrett-Harrison Stadium
When: Today, 8 p.m.
Records: Harris County 0-0 (9-3 last season). Central 0-1.
Series: Central leads 1-0, a 48-43 victory in Hamilton, Ga., last season.
Last week: Harris County was idle. Central lost 13-7 to Stockbridge.
You need to know: Harris County enters its season-opener without offensive stars TaQuon Marshall (Georgia Tech) and Tae Crowder (Georgia). The Tigers expect to play both Chandler Lott and Tank Adams at quarterback. A host of running backs could be called upon to replace Crowder, including Hardaway transfer Bubba Blackmon. He ran for more than 1,000 yards for the Hawks in 2014. The Central offense struggled last week before QB Zion Webb got hurt and after. Webb is out with a knee injury. Central has refused to detail the injury. The third-ranked Red Devils' lone score came on Karon Delince's kickoff return to start the game.
SMITHS STATION AT DOTHAN
Where: Rip Hewes Stadium, Dothan, Ala.
When: Today, 8 p.m.
Records: Smiths Station 1-0. Dothan 0-1.
Series: Smiths Station leads 8-5, including a 27-24 victory last season.
Last week: Smiths Station beat Americus-Sumter 41-13. Dothan lost 43-22 to Navarre (Fla.).
You need to know: Dalton Sinquefield threw for 317 yards and two TDs against Americus-Sumter last week. He also led the Panthers with 76 yards rushing. Will Clanton caught 4 passes for 120 yards. Dothan gave up 487 yards rushing to Navarre, according to the Dothan Eagle.
RUSSELL COUNTY AT EUFAULA
Where: Tigers Stadium, Eufaula, Ala.
When: Today, 8 p.m.
Records: Russell County 0-0 (0-10 last season). Eufaula 0-0 (5-6 last season).
Series: Eufaula leads 33-5, including a 21-6 victory last season.
Last week: Both teams were idle.
You need to know: Russell County has lost 12 straight, dating back to a 35-10 win over BTW in October 2013. The Warriors will be relying on wide receiver Francisco Santana and running back Travis Smith. Eufaula has won 14 straight against Russell County, whose last win in the series came in 1998.
SHERWOOD AT GLENWOOD
Where: Sammy Howard Field
When: Today, 8 p.m.
Records: Sherwood 0-1. Glenwood 0-0 (3-8 last season).
Series: Sherwood leads 1-0 with a 27-14 victory last season.
Last week: Sherwood lost 35-0 to Abbeville Christian. .
You need to know: Sherwood won the GICAA state championship last season over Calvary Christian. Glenwood was 3-2 at one time last season before injuries took their roll, resulting in a six-game losing streak to end the season.
